Throughout the Gospels, Jesus engages in unpredictable, unexpected behavior. When circumstances would suggest Jesus should go this way, he goes that way. Those whom others avoid, Jesus touches.
In this sermon, we are invited to find quiet time with God which will renew our mission as disciples of Jesus. Jesus spent time in solitude in the midst of his very busy schedule but it was that solitude that renewed his strength for the mission work he continued to do.

God meets us on the mountain top with experiences that enrich and imprint us the importance and strength to follow God when we come down from the mountain. These experiences are meant to empower us for the fearful faithfulness God is calling us to embark.
In our humanness, we want to know, to define, and to have concrete answers for everything. However, life is filled with uncertainty. We trust that God, the great Mystery, is always present with us in our wondering.
We are bombarded by visual images, and can mistake what is seen for what is true. God reveals hidden truths, surprising us and challenging our assumptions. Once our eyes and hearts are opened, we can see with greater clarity.
Our human society values status, power, wealth, and success. God turns things upside down by becoming one of us, taking the role of a humble servant. In hope, we shout praise that God can deliver us, even while we ask, “Who is this?”
